How to use the Doctor is IN

This new feature of TheFilipinoDoctor.com displays a switch panel on your log in page.
On the center of the switch panel, you will find the switches for IN and OUT.

To set your availability for the day, click or tap on either the IN or OUT panel on the switch that you find on your log in page.  This will automatically set all the switches corresponding to every schedule you have for the day.  To avoid misinformation, these settings are good only for the day.

To set your availability for the week, click or tap on the link under the panel that reads Set your availability for the week.  This will open your clinics and schedules on the lower part of the current page.  You can now individually set to IN or OUT each of your schedules for the entire week.  To avoid misinformation, these settings are good only for the current week.

All settings for both day and week will reset to “blank” after the day or week is over.

Thank you!

Developmental Milestones: What Two Expect

By: Clarissa Mariano-Ligon, Ph.D. article_15

The journey of parenthood is an exciting situation that many soon-to-be parents are eager to embrace yet feel nervous about.  This feeling of nervousness is normal because welcoming a bundle of joy in the family comes with many responsibilities, one of which is ensuring that your child is receiving proper care and attention that he or she needs.

Each child is different and unique.  A parent of identical twins can attest to this.  However, experts have listed a set of milestones that gives parents an idea about the normal development of a child.  It usually comes in a checklist that represents what an average child can do within a particular age.  But keep in mind that this will vary from child to child.  A good example is a child may begin walking as early as 10 months but his/her cousin might walk by 15 months old.  Even if the accomplishment of the milestones differs, it would still be good to keep on guard for any possible problems.

At 2 months old, you will begin to notice that your baby is smiling.  Of course, crying is still a big part of what children do day and night.  By 4 months old, you may start hearing a combination of consonant-vowel sounds called babbling.  This is important because a combination of babbles such as “ma” will create basic words like “mama”.   At 6 months old, you might need to do a second round of baby proofing to ensure that your home is safe for a baby who enjoys crawling.  By 9 months old, you can now play a classic game with your baby, which is the peekaboo.  This is crucial for a child’s development because not only does it encourage social development, but it also teaches object permanence.  This helps the child understand that it is okay for things to disappear because it can be retrieved later.  This also teaches them that people exist, which means that even if you leave for work, you will eventually come back.

Now, have you heard about the phrase “Terrible Twos”?  This term has been used to describe what parents have experienced once their child turned two years old.  One reason this happens is because children at this age can understand much more than they can verbalize. Not being able to communicate their needs and feelings contributes to their emotional outbursts. Since two-year-olds can walk without assistance already, they are eager to do things on.  They are testing their newfound independence.  However, parents are starting to put rules in place and this situation can be difficult for them, leading to frustrations and tantrums.

When a child becomes a preschooler, one milestone to look out for is social play.  By this time, children become more interested in their peers.  They start interacting with other children, share toys, and talk about their ideas.  In playing, children can practice social skills like cooperating and taking turns.

As they enter the middle childhood stage, children will master gross motor skills such as riding a bike or jumping rope.  Their fine motor skills are continuously developing as well, that is why you might notice that they are inclined to try various activities like playing a musical instrument or creating some artworks.  It is also during this time that they form more meaningful and deeper relationships with friends.  You might have observed that as they move from one grade level to another, they tend to be with the same group of peers.

According to Pediatrics, adolescents have unique needs.  They are now beginning to have an interest in romantic relationships and would like to practice more independence from their parents.  Thus, they want to spend more time with their friends than with their family.  Some children experience depression during this stage.  As parents, it would be good to discuss the concerns that your child may have and pay close attention in case there any changes in his or her behavior.

The information mentioned above is just a small part of the developmental milestones.   For a complete detailed list, you may look into the checklist made by the Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) Council, which is the coordinating body on early childhood education tasked by the national government in the Philippines.  Another source that you may want to check is the American Association of Pediatrics.  Likewise, you may consult with your family pediatrician as well.  Keep in mind that each child is unique.  However, there is also nothing wrong about being cautious in watching your child develop because if there is a delay, early intervention can make a huge difference.
